Common questions
When does co-managed make more sense than full outsourcing?
When you already employ one or two IT people who are competent but stretched. Full outsourcing duplicates what you are paying for and often demotivates the staff you keep. Co-managed buys the parts that are genuinely hard to staff internally: nights, weekends, and narrow specialisms.
How is the split usually defined?
Most commonly by tier and by hours: the provider takes tier-1 tickets and after-hours coverage, your team keeps escalations and anything touching business-specific systems. Get the boundary written into the agreement — ambiguity here is the main reason these arrangements fail.
Does our internal person lose their job?
That is the fear that kills most co-managed deals, and it is worth addressing directly before it becomes a rumour. The usual outcome is the internal person stops doing password resets at 9pm and starts doing project work. Involve them in provider selection rather than presenting the decision.
